UPMASA's History

UPMASA started around friendships, the desire to help, and gratitude to the college that made us who we are today.

How it all started.

In 1980, a group of medical alumni from the University of the Philippines residing in the United States of America gathered together and voted to form a counterpart of the UPMAS (University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society) abroad and called it UPMASA. Its mission was to provide continuing support to the UP College of Medicine and its affiliate, the Philippine General Hospital in its quest for academic and scientific excellence and in its goal to elevate the standards of medical education in the Philippines and standard of health care for the Filipino patient.

In its more than two decades of existence, the organization has grown by leaps and bounds with over 2500 alumni in the database to date, 15 chapters nationwide and over $2.5 M in its PEF (Permanent Endowment Fund) coffers by fiscal year ending June 30, 2007.

In recognition of its benevolent work and generous contributions, UPMASA received the University of the Philippines Alumni Association Outstanding Alumni Chapter Award in 2001 and the Linkapil Award (presented by President Gloria Macapagal in December 2004 at the Malacanang Palace).

The organization continues to strive to be a model for operational efficiency, organizational excellence and inspirational leadership. UPMASA over the years has consistently kept its focus on its objectives and targets. We have reached out beyond our realm and formed alliances with other medical professionals who share the same interests - that of advancing the welfare of Filipino physicians and promoting the well being of the communities it serves.
